The Importance of Building a Team and the Steps to do So

So, now that many of us around the country are on stay at home orders or some sort of shut down in lieu of the COVID19 I’m sure we are all getting so much work done with all the extra time you have! Am I right?! Not really huh? It’s ok. These are hard times, and not to mention unpredictable; at this point if you aren’t dealing with some level of insanity, anxiety, depression, or stress, I’m worried you may be a robot.

Truth be told, very few of us are feeling extremely motivated and/or inspired right now and working eight hours a day from home is much harder than it seems. Let me tell you what you’re really missing, your team!

Whether or not we realized it, your teams not only take tasks off of your lists, but stress off your back, and add a side of motivation! All the small things we typically take for granted but are missing so much right now. Wait, there’s more! Let me guess, you’re also feeling like your head is going to explode with all of the thoughts you’re trying to process on a daily basis, add kids to the mix and it's enough to make the most reasonable, well put together adult go mad! That is another reason why you need your team, to help you manage and organize your ideas, tasks, and schedules. You cannot keep it all in! But in the wave of COVID19, how do you build your team?! We have a step by step guide just for you:

  1. Write down and organize your biggest needs; tasks you don’t have as much time for that you can train someone else to do well.

  2. Write down the type of personality traits and ethics you expect from or would like from members of your hypothetical team.

  3. Began your search! Make sure that you have job descriptions and specific tasks for your needs. The first members of your team should be responsible for your most important delegated tasks.

  4. Connect with people! Connecting with your team individually is extremely important. Not only do you want them to be hardworking but also trustworthy, professional even under stressful circumstances, and passionate about their work.

  5. Be professional and set the standard. The best way to set the expectation for your team is to show them the way! Have professional interviews, job titles, and processes set in place to teach them the ropes.

  6. Benefits. Don’t let that word scare you, it doesn’t always have to mean medical or retirement; it could be a good negotiated pay rate, promotion, networking, education/training. You want there to be incentives for them to choose you and your business and to stay devoted to it as well.

  7. Be open and patient, there will be a learning curve. Expect that your team only knows as much as you tell them and do not expect them to do everything just like you. Who knows, they may inspire some new ideas!

The most important thing you want to keep in mind is what you would want as an employee and what you need as a boss. Follow these steps and you will be well on your way to selecting the most efficient, motivated, and passionate team you couldn’t find on Indeed.
